Vision and Light

Darkness and other effects that obscure vision can prove a significant hindrance. A given area might be lightly or heavily obscured.

Lightly Obscured: A creature that is trying to see something in a lightly obscured area has disadvantage on Intellect tests that rely on sight. Examples include dim light, patchy fog, and moderate foliage.

Heavily Obscured: A creature that is trying to see something in a heavily obscured area is effectively blinded. Examples include darkness, opaque fog, and heavy foliage.

Rules Tip: Unless sight is your only sense, obscurement doesn't affect your passive perception (see Passive Tests), as you can rely on other senses.

Bring Your Own Light: A torch or lantern sheds bright light in a 4-square radius, and dim light for an additional 4 squares. A torch burns for 1 hour. A flask of oil (see Useful Items in Combat) fuels a lantern for 8 hours.
