Specialty Weapons

This weapon category includes bolas, garrotes, lances, nets, and whips. When you hold a specialty weapon, its special attackis added to the list of attacks you can choose from when you use the Attack action. If you attack with bolas, a garrote, or a net in any other fashion, it is treated as an improvised weapon (see Improvised Weapons).

  • Bolas (Entangle): You throw the bolas to make a ranged attack against a Large or smaller creature. If you succeed, you forgo dealing damage, and your result is opposed by the target's Agility test. The target fails automatically if it is incapacitated. If the target fails, it falls prone.

  • Garrote (Strangle): You wield the garrote with two hands to make a melee attack against a creature that is no more than one size larger than you and against which you have advantage on the Fighting test. If you succeed, you forgo dealing damage, and your result is opposed by the target's Agility test. The target fails automatically if it is incapacitated. If the target fails, it is grabbed by you via the garrote. Until the grab ends, the target can neither breathe nor speak, and you have advantage on Fighting tests against it.

  • Lance (Joust): You wield the lance to make a melee attack against a creature no more than one sizelarger than you. If you are mounted and your mount moves at least 2 squares in a straight line immediately before the attack, you have advantage on the Fighting test. If you succeed, you forgo dealing damage, and your result is opposed by the target's Agility test. The target fails automatically if it is incapacitated. If the target fails, it falls prone.

Your reach for melee attacks with a lance is 1 square greater than normal. When you aren't mounted, the lance is treated as an improvised weapon when you attack with it.

  • Net (Capture): You throw the net to make a blast attack (see Blast Attacks) against a nonformless creature that is within 3 squares of you, that is Large or smaller, and against which you have advantage on the Fighting test. If you succeed, your result is opposed by the target's Agility test. The target fails automatically if it is incapacitated. If the target fails, it is restrained until it is freed.

A creature can use its action to make a Medium (3+) Strength test, freeing itself or another creature within its reach on a success. Destroying the net also frees the creature. The net has 1 hit point and immunity to poison and psychic damage. In addition, the net has immunity to the mundane damage of weapons, except edged weapons (axes, claws, daggers, and so on).

  • Whip (Lash): You wield the whip to make a melee attack. Your reach for the attack is 2 squares greater than normal.

A whip is treated as an improvised weapon when you attack with it. The Lash Mastery (1 SP) feat removes this drawback.

Rules Tip: Holding a whip doesn't increase your reach for the purpose of opportunity attacks; superior reach is a property of the "lash" special attack, not of melee whip attacks in general.
